Wolverine Boys Place 2nd at Newberg Tournament
The Bellevue High School boys water polo team traveled to Oregon to attend the 2017 Newberg High School Boys Water Polo Tournament. Ten pacific NW teams competed in the two day event. The Bellevue boys started their impressive tournament run with a 14-5 win over West Albany on Friday evening.
On Saturday, the Wolverines faced the South Eugene Axemen in their second game. Starting off fresh, the boys were up by 3 goals in the first quarter. Eugene pressed hard forcing the Wolverines to come from behind to tie the game at the end of the fourth quarter. Four minutes into sudden death overtime, with several attempts on goal by both teams, Bellevue scored the golden goal, coming away with a 12-11 victory over the Axemen.
The semi-final game had Bellevue going against the equally competitive Southridge Skyhawks from Beaverton, OR. The Southridge game was back and forth the entire game with both teams playing strong defense. Bellevue scored within the last two minutes putting the Wolverines ahead. The Skyhawks had final possession of the ball but Bellevue’s unrelenting defense held Southridge in the back half of the field for the last 18 seconds of the game. The Wolverines triumphed over the Skyhawks 10-9.
The tournament final had the Wolverines facing the 2016 Oregon State Water Polo champions, the Newberg Tigers. Bellevue scored first and held the score to 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. Newberg scored twice in the second quarter and Bellevue fought hard to catch up scoring two more goals but could not hold the Tigers and lost the game 12-4, placing second overall for the tournament.
The young Wolverines unified as a team; displaying amazing defense and great effort on offense. Thanks to the coaches for their time and the all the parents who traveled to Oregon to support the team.
