Girls JV Wolverines Season Ends, Varsity’s First Defeat

May 14th, 2017
The Varsity Girls had a tough loss to Mercer Island on Tuesday; it was the first loss in District play. Morgan Baker started off the sluggish first quarter with a goal. In spite of Morgan’s interception and steal and Jenna Frazer’s steal in the second quarter, we were down 3-1 at the half. Sophia Simons scored in Q3 and Morgan tallied another steal and an assist to Elena Acevedo for her goal, bringing the score to 3-3 at the end of Q3. All the while, goalie Sophia Simons was saving goals each quarter. Natasha Schmid took the sprint to start Q4. Morgan Baker answered Mercer Island’s goal to bring the game to 4-4. MI scored two unanswered goals until Morgan scored her hat trick to bring the final score to 5-6, MI. We will see them again at Regionals and we will be ready!
Thursday we ventured to Tacoma to defeat Stadium High School 13-3 with Erica Esselstrom and Sophia Simons splitting the goalie duties. Elena Started us off with possession, winning the sprint. Goals were scored by Morgan Baker (4), Natasha Schmid (3), Jenna Frazer (2), Katie Duff, Holly Harris, Sophia Schmid and Grace Li; assisted by Sophia Schmid, Holly Harris, Erica Esselstrom, Natasha Schmid and Jenna Frazer.
This coming week we will head back to University Place to battle Curtis High School Tuesday, May 16th at 5:00. Then Regionals are Friday and Saturday at Rogers High School in Puyallup.
The JV squad ended their season with a four game tournament Saturday, defeating Puyallup and Mercer Island, and falling to Newport and Tahoma. The team had a successful season, preparing them well for next year!

It was a busy week for the Lady Wolverine Water Polo Team. On Monday, May 1st, The girls took the Division Title defeating Newport HS 7-6 in a nail-biting tying game until the last minute. Natasha Schmid and Elena Acevedo split the winning sprints two apiece, giving us possession at the outset of each quarter. Natasha proved her versatility by playing goalie in the deep end for two quarters, saving 4 would-be goals. Multifaceted Katie Duff also stretched and covered the goal two quarters, saving a remarkable 8 goals! Goals were scored by team captain Morgan Baker (2), Tatiana Pasewark, Jenna Frazer (with a gorgeous lob over the Newport goalie’s head), Team Captain Sophia Schmid (also with a beautiful lob into the goal) and Natasha Schmid. Holly Harris took one for the team in the hole to draw a Penalty shot which Natasha handily sank into the corner. Morgan blocked a would-be goal in the second quarter, helping out Katie in the goal. Holly intercepted a would-be goal in the third quarter allowing Jenna to plop her shot in the goal. Jenna and Sophia Schmid tallied a few key steals in this exciting game. Final score 7-6 Bellevue!
Friday night the girls met Roosevelt at Helene Madison Pool for a shellacking. Bellevue won 21-2 with goals racked up by Morgan Baker (5), Holly Harris (5), Natasha Schmid (4), Tatiana Pasewark (2), Jenna Frazer, Sarah Kim, Katie Duff and Elena Acevedo. Natasha and Jenna gracefully covered the entire pool and led the team in steals (at least 5 each!).

The Varsity and JV Water Polo teams were very busy with tournaments both of the last two weekends. The Varsity Girls travelled to Beaverton, Oregon to place 3rd in the Rose Cup Tournament. The Lady Wolverines won both games Saturday April 22nd, first defeating Tualatin Hills Grey 11-0 with goals from Sophia Schmid (3), Morgan Baker (3), Natasha Schmid, Jenna Frazer, Sarah Kim, Erica Esselstrom, Tatiana Pasewark. Next we defeated Chehalen 7-6 with goals from Jenna Frazer, Sophia Schmid (2) and Morgan Baker (4). With two wins Saturday, we played Tualatin Hills A Team first thing Sunday morning April 23rd, losing 6-3 in a tough match. The girls came alive in the 4th quarter with goals from Holly Harris, Morgan Baker and Natasha Schmid. This put us in the semifinals, competing for 3rd or 4th place in the tournament. The girls played hard with a special goalie challenge. It was all Blue Crush in the 3rd quarter and then all Bellevue in the 4th. We defeated Blue Crush from Portland 8-7 with goals scored by Morgan Baker (3), Holly Harris, Katie Duff and Tatiana Pasewark (3 in a row!). The girls left with a medal for 3rd place!
The Varsity squad combined with the reliable JV squad and defeated Auburn Riverside on Tuesday the 25th 21-5! Goals were scored by Morgan Baker (3), Elena Acevedo (3), Holly Harris (5), Tatiana Pasewark, Natasha Schmid (4), Sophia Schmid (2), Jenna Frazer (2) and Claire Zhong. The JV girls helped out again Thursday against Shorecrest, winning 12-7. Goals were scored by Elena Acevedo (2), Holly Harris (2), Morgan Baker (4), Tatiana Pasewark, Natasha Schmid and Sophia Schmid. All the girls had a chance to practice plays and win! The JV girls played the Shorecrest JV team and defeated them as well 8-5.
The JV had a busy weekend in Puyallup at the Invitational tournament defeating Auburn in sauna-like conditions 7-4 and defeating Puyallup. They tied with Rogers 3-3. Then they just needed a little more time to come back in the final match up with the Vikings (Curtis), losing 7-4, but dominating the second half.
As if that were not enough, the JV team also defeated Shorecrest on Saturday morning in their league game.
Games this week are Monday May 1st against Newport for the Varsity Division Title, at Edgebrook Pool at 6:15 pm Varsity and 7:15 pm JV. Friday we play Roosevelt at Helene Madison Pool at 8:15 pm.
