Bellevue falls to Lakes, 12-1

After two close losses to divisional opponents last week, Bellevue hit the pool on Wednesday evening eager to end its losing ways. In its path was Lakes, one of the top teams in the Greater Tacoma area. While the Wolverines ultimately fell 12-1, it was not before an injury scare that nearly changed the course of the Wolverines’ season.
The first quarter featured just one goal, scored by Lakes on a 5-meter penalty shot. But what the first quarter lacked in goals, it made up for in action. Defensively, senior co-captain Sierra Anderson made several spectacular blocks and freshman Morgan Baker had several key steals. Offensively, the Wolverines earned multiple man-up advantages off its strong post-up play, but was unable to convert its 6-on-5 opportunities. As time was winding down on a fast-paced first quarter, Bellevue’s worst fears materialized: Anderson, chasing down a loose ball in the corner of the pool, smashed her foot on the metal goalpost and had to be removed from the game.
Backup sophomore goalie Katherine Shogren bravely jumped in the pool for her first career varsity action, but the shell-shocked Wolverines struggled to keep their focus. Lakes scored five straight outside shots and never looked back, building an 7-0 halftime lead en route to a 12-1 finish.
Fortunately for the Wolverines, Anderson’s injury does not appear to be season-ending and she is probable for Bellevue’s (5-10) next game on Monday against Newport.
