Bellevue falls to MI, Shorewood
Mercer Island 5, Bellevue 3
On Thursday afternoon, the Bellevue Wolverines traveled to Mary Wayte Pool to face North League rival Mercer Island. Last Sunday, the two teams faced off in the final game at the Lakes Invite. That time, Bellevue won 8-5. This time, Mercer Island gained the upper hand.
Sophomore Maggie Ugelstad opened the scoring with the lone first quarter goal, putting Bellevue ahead 1-0. In the second quarter, Mercer Island struck back to even the game at 1-1 entering halftime. While Ugelstad scored another goal in the third, Mercer Island was able to match. In the fourth, freshman Morgan Baker added a goal, but it was after Mercer Island had tallied two straight goals. With Bellevue furiously fighting to regain the ball in the final seconds, Mercer Island converted their third goal of the period to end the game at 5-3. Senior co-captain Sierra Anderson had seven saves and four steals in the loss.
Shorewood 8, Bellevue 7
Less than 24 hours after a tough loss to Mercer Island, the Wolverines jumped back in the pool to face Shorewood High School in North Seattle. In the first matchup between the two teams, Bellevue won in thrilling fashion, 4-3 in sudden death overtime. To no one’s surprise, Friday’s game was another tense battle between league foes.
In the first quarter, Bellevue struggled to convert their chances, allowing Shorewood to take an early 1-0 first quarter lead. That one goal proved to be the difference, as the teams split the second quarter 3-3, the third quarter 1-1 and the fourth quarter 3-3. Freshman Morgan Baker led the Wolverines with 3 goals in the loss. Senior co-captain Julie Mao and sophomore Alexis Taber added two goals each. Nina Stash led the team with two ejections drawn.
Bellevue (5-9) returns to the pool next Wednesday in a road game against Lakes.
