Bellevue wins two in San Diego
Fresh off a disappointing overtime loss to Mercer Island on Tuesday, the Bellevue Wolverines bounced back in strong fashion during the first round of the San Diego Open Tournament. Bellevue opened the tournament with a 16-2 win over Monte Vista High School, followed by a 13-7 victory over Helix High School. With the victories, the Wolverines placed first in their bracket and advanced to the Top 16 of the 40-team tournament.
Bellevue 16, Monte Vista 2
Behind two quick first quarter goals from junior Marco Stanchi, Bellevue jumped out to a 6-1 first quarter lead. By halftime, it was 11-2 and the Wolverines never looked back. Stanchi, senior co-captain George French and sophomore Zack Rossman each scored four goals, while senior Silas Clapham added three. Sophomore Daniel Sandler added the other goal.
Acevedo played exceptional in the cage, posting five saves. He also directed a superb man-down defense that held Monte Vista to 1-for-12 on man-down opportunities.
Senior co-captain Scott Bowers had a team-high three assists. Rossman posted six steals.
Bellevue 13, Helix 7
A balanced offensive attack and tough defensive pressure helped the Wolverines roll past Helix High School in the Thursday evening nightcap. Nine of eleven Wolverines scored in the victory, including two from Stanchi, French, Clapham and freshman Cameron Hayes. Twelve of the thirteen goals were assisted, highlighting the Wolverines’ unselfish team play. Stanchi and Hayes paced the team with four assists.
Bellevue (16-4) squares off against Granite Hills on Friday evening at 7:00pm, with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals on Saturday morning.
