Bellevue falls to Mercer Island in overtime
In front of a packed crowd at Mercer Island Country Club, the Bellevue Wolverines fell to Mercer Island in overtime on Tuesday night, 15-13. The loss snapped the Wolverines’ thirteen game winning steak.
After Islander junior Anthony Pedreria opened the game with a goal on the Islanders’ first possession, Bellevue answered with three of their own to build a 3-1 first quarter lead. In the second quarter, the Wolverines extended their lead to 7-3 behind junior center Marco Stanchi and sophomore Zack Rossman.
During the third quarter, the Islanders took advantage of several Bellevue ejections to narrow the deficit to three goals. Early in the fourth quarter, Bellevue’s ejection party continued, as Stanchi committed his third and was forced to sit out the remainder of the game. Mercer Island capitalized on Stanchi’s absence and cut the lead to two. With two minutes remaining in the game, the Islanders converted a five-meter penalty shot after Bellevue goalie Garrett Moffatt was called for a ball-under. Two possessions later, Larkin sent the game into overtime with a clutch counterattack goal.
In overtime, the Islanders rode momentum and a heavy dose of Larkin to finish off a tired and depleted Wolverine squad. While Bellevue scored one goal on a man-up advantage, Mercer Island scored three to put away the Wolverines.
Bellevue (14-4) travels to San Diego for the San Diego Invitational on Thursday.
