Bellevue wins Lakes Invitational
In a tournament featuring five of the state’s six top programs, the Bellevue Wolverines went a perfect 5-0 to capture first place at the Lakes Invitational. Bellevue defeated Newport, Auburn-Mountainview, Lakes, Roosevelt and Mercer Island en route to the championship. Bellevue claimed the championship despite missing two starters, co-captains George French and Stuart McClelland. Junior Marco Stanchi led the Wolverines with 17 goals in five games, sophomore Zack Rossman had 16, and junior Liam Naughton had 15.
Bellevue 14, Newport 1
In a rematch of Thursday night’s contest, Bellevue used a 7-0 first quarter to beat Newport for the third time this season. Junior Marco Stanchi led the Wolverines with five goals and five steals. Sophomore Zack Rossman added three goals and three assists. Freshman Sam Geffe scored the first goal of his varsity career in the victory.
Bellevue 14, Auburn-Mountainview 5
After barely escaping Auburn with an 18-15 victory two weeks ago, the Wolverines were eager for a rematch with the Lions. Playing with a renewed focus on defense, the Wolverines held the Lions to a single first-half goal en route to a 10-1 halftime advantage. Naughton and Stanchi led the offense with 4 goals each. Seniors Diego Acevedo and Garrett Moffatt split time in goal, racking up eight total saves.
Bellevue 20, Lakes 4
In Saturday evening’s nightcap, Bellevue used a 11-2 first half to defeat tournament host Lakes High School 20-4. Naughton and Rossman continued their torrid shooting with five goals apiece. Senior Silas Clapham added four goals. Freshman Cameron Hayes added five assists. Junior Sevren Trulson scored the first varsity goal of his career in the victory. Moffatt tied a school record with five assists from the cage. With the win, the Wolverines secured the top seed in their bracket, setting up a semifinal showdown with Kingco Division rival Roosevelt.
Bellevue 13, Roosevelt 10
Sunday’s semifinal pitted the Wolverines against their Kingco Division foes from Seattle. After ending the first period tied 2-2, Bellevue rode a 6-2 second quarter to put away the young but talented Roosevelt squad. Hayes led the offense with four goals. Stanchi added four assists.
Bellevue 18, Mercer Island 12
In the championship game, Bellevue used an aggressive press and a blistering counter-attack to defeat rival Mercer Island 18-12. A high-scoring first quarter ended with Bellevue on top 5-4. Similar to the Roosevelt game, Bellevue used a 7-2 second-quarter run to build an insurmountable halftime lead. Rossman led the offense with six goals. Stanchi added four goals on four shots and added four ejections drawn. Naughton led the team with six assists, while classmate Josh Rehder chipped in five assists. Junior Garrett Williams scored his first goal of the season on the fourth-quarter counterattack.
Bellevue (12-3) returns to action on Wednesday against Shorewood.
