Bellevue tops Auburn-Mountainview, 18-15
On Saturday afternoon, Bellevue faced off against Auburn-Mountainview in a rematch of the Wolverines’ 2012 State quarterfinal matchup. After a high-scoring affair in which senior co-captain George French tied a school-record for goals in a game with 11, Bellevue escaped with a 18-15 victory.
With three Bellevue starters forced to sit out the first quarter, Auburn-Mountainview took advantage and led at the end of the first quarter, 1-0.
Early in the second quarter, junior Josh Rehder scored Bellevue’s first goal to tie the score at 1-1. Auburn-Mountainview responded with a series of goals and led halfway through the second quarter, 4-1. But Bellevue turned it up and came roaring back late in the second quarter with two goals from French and one goal each from senior co-captain Stuart McClellend, senior Silas Clapham, and junior Marco Stanchi. At halftime, the game was tied 6-6.
In the third quarter, French exploded on the offensive end with six goals. Clapham and senior co-captain Scott Bowers also scored for Bellevue. However, Auburn-Mountainview refused to go down without a fight. They matched four of Bellevue’s eight third quarter goals to keep it close, 10-14, at end of the third quarter.
The intensity continued in the fourth quarter with French and McClelland scoring goals for Bellevue. Yet for every Bellevue goal, Auburn Mountainside seemed to have an answer, pulling alongside Bellevue at 15-16 with 2 minutes left. But down the stretch, French scored two critical goals to put the game away. Senior goalkeepers Diego Acevedo and Garrett Moffatt split time in the cage.
Bellevue (4-3) will face rival Mercer Island at home on Tuesday, Oct. 1st at 5:30 PM at Woodridge Pool.
