Wolverines go 1-3 in California
Just ten days into the 2013 season, the Bellevue Wolverines packed their bags and headed south to Irvine, California, to compete in the 8th Annual Chris Weisz-TRX Memorial Cup hosted by El Dorado High School. Making the trip were seniors Diego Acevedo, Stuart McClelland, Scott Bowers, George French and Silas Clapham, juniors Josh Rehder, Liam Naughton, Marco Stanchi, Garrett Williams, Quinlan Hughes and Sevren Trulson, and freshman Cameron Hayes.
On Friday, September 5th, the Wolverines kicked off their season against Royal High School of Simi Valley, CA. After a sluggish first quarter, the Wolverines jumped out to a 4-2 halftime lead and did not look back, winning 9-6. Stanchi filled the stat sheet with four goals, two assists, and three ejections drawn.
In their second game of the evening, the Wolverines fell to Redlands High School 13-8. Clapham and Stanchi chipped in three goals each, while French added three ejections drawn in the loss.
On Saturday morning, Bellevue squared off against Laguna Hills High School. Once again the Wolverines stumbled out of the gate, going down 4-1 after the first quarter. However, a 5-2 second quarter helped the Wolverines tie the game at 6-6 entering halftime. The second half was a back-and-forth affair, but the Wolverines came up one goal short and lost 13-12. French led the offense with four goals, while Naughton added two goals and three assists.
In the fourth and final game of the tournament, the Wolverines faced off against Woodbridge High School. Stanchi paced the offense with four goals and four ejections drawn, but the Wolverines ran out of steam and lost 14-10.
