Hayes leads Bellevue past Newport, 11-3
Playing in the first varsity league game of his career, freshman Cameron Hayes performed like an old veteran, leading the Wolverines past crosstown rival Newport High School 11-3 on Wednesday night.
In a rematch of the 2012 State semifinal game, the Wolverines sputtered out of the gate, struggling to convert several first-half opportunities. Meanwhile, the young Knights proved opportunistic, scoring two goals in the second quarter to enter halftime trailing by just three. But in the third quarter, Hayes scored two of his team-high three goals to spark a 5-0 Wolverine run to put the game away for Bellevue.
Junior two-meter Marco Stanchi added three goals and five ejections drawn. Josh Rehder added three assists and two steals. Senior goalkeeper Diego Acevedo had seven blocks and one assist.
Bellevue (2-3) returns to action on Tuesday, September 24th at 8:45pm against Shorewood High School at Shoreline Pool.
