Stanchi earns spot at National Team Selection Camp
Last weekend in Nevada, Bellevue sophomore Marco Stanchi was selected to USA Water Polo’s National Team Selection Camp. The National Team Selection Camp (NTSC) consists of 70 of the country’s top 9th and 10th graders. In late May, Stanchi will compete in Southern California for one of 30 spots on the US Cadet National Team. The Cadet National Team travels internationally and represents the United States against the best teams in the world.
The selection caps a meteoric rise for the 6’2, 200 pound sophomore. After focusing on swimming through his freshman year, Stanchi started playing water polo last May for Rain City Water Polo club. In the fall, he helped lead the Boys Water Polo team to its second-straight state title, earning First-Team All-State honors in the process. Now, just ten months into his water polo career, he is one step away from earning a spot on the Cadet National Team.
Four Wolverines joined Stanchi at last weekend’s ODP East/West Regional tryout: junior George French and sophomores Liam Naughton, Josh Rehder and Daniel Sandler. Stanchi was one of five athletes from the State of Washington to qualify for the NTSC. The others were Thomas Henline (Auburn-Riverside HS – 18u), Conrad Gordon (Roosevelt HS – 16u), Jake Gordon (14u) and Taylor Powers (14u).
