Bellevue falls to MI & Roosevelt
3/18/13
Fresh off its first victory of the season last Wednesday, Bellevue jumped back in the pool on Monday against perennial power Mercer Island. Unfortunately for Bellevue, their Monday result was much different than Wednesday. Thanks to an aggressive press and a relentless counterattack, the Islanders toppled the Wolverines 7-3.
In the first quarter, Mercer Island swam, passed and shot their way to a quick 6-0 lead. While the second quarter was scoreless, it took a handful of great saves by junior goalie Sierra Anderson to keep the Islanders at bay. Bellevue did not find the back of the net until freshman Lillie French rifled in an outside shot in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, two ejections drawn by junior two-meter Sophie Quynn led to two goals from freshman Sophie French.
While the game ended in a four-goal differential, the outcome was never in doubt. Mercer Island dominated all facets of the game, but Bellevue learned several valuable lessons from a great team.
After falling to a very strong Mercer Island team, the Wolverines returned to action two days later and faced another talented North Division squad: the Roosevelt Roughriders. Led by senior Mirei Yasuda and junior Helena Klein, the Roughriders featured two of the top players in the state.
Still, the young Wolverine squad did not back down. After Roosevelt struck early to go up 1-0, freshman Sophie French answered immediately by burying an outside shot to tie the game at 1-1. But 1-1 would prove to be the closest that the Wolverines would come to the Roughriders. Roosevelt ripped off three more first quarter goals and then held the Wolverines scoreless the rest of the game en route to a 12-1 victory. Freshman Lillie French contributed six steals and junior goalie Sierra Anderson added four steals in the loss.
The defeat dropped the Wolverines to a 1-3 record.
