Girls Water Polo is Back!!!
After a seven-year hiatus, girls water polo is back at Bellevue High School. Thanks to the efforts of students Lillie French, Sophie French and Sierra Anderson, parents Julie Potts, Stacie LeBlanc and Laurie McDonald, and coach Evan Kaseguma, the program received administrative approval in December 2012 to re-launch for the 2013 spring season. As February 25th (first day of spring sports) approaches, anticipation and excitement build for Bellevue High’s newest varsity sport.
Founded in 1999, BHS girls water polo enjoyed several successful seasons until the program disbanded after the 2005 spring season. During that period, the program qualified for multiple state tournaments and sent a handful of athletes to college programs, including Caitlin Fahey, a two-team All-North selection at Brown University.
Bellevue High becomes the 24th high school girls water polo team in the state of Washington. Teams are split into four divisions based on geography (North, East, South and West), with the top 12 teams competing in the state tournament on May 15-18. The Wolverines will join the North Division and compete against Bainbridge Island, Inglemoor, Mercer Island, Newport, Roosevelt and Shorewood. Non-league games against teams from Tacoma, Auburn and other South End cities have been scheduled. The team will compete at the Lakes Jamboree on March 9th and the Auburn Tournament on April 19-20. A final schedule should be released in early February.
Evan Kaseguma, assistant boys water polo coach, will serve as head coach of the girls team. The team plans to field varsity and JV teams. All athletes are welcome regardless of experience — water polo is a no-cut team sport. The primary goal of the 2013 season is to re-establish the program, introduce the sport to the community, and have fun. Interested athletes should speak to the BHS athletic department and contact us at bellevuegirlswaterpolo@gmail.com.
