Bellevue beats Auburn-Mountainview, Advances to Semis
On Friday night at Curtis High School, the Bellevue Wolverines defeated the Auburn-Mountainview Lions 10-5 to advance to tomorrow’s state semifinals.
After Auburn-Mountainview struck first with an early goal, junior Silas Clapham evened the score on a 6-on-5 advantage. Bellevue then scored three straight to end the first period up 4-1. However, the first quarter was not without drama. Junior Scott Bowers, leading the team in assists, was unable to play. In addition, senior two-meter defender Arlen Hughes earned two early ejections, causing the Wolverines to turn to junior Cole Wydrowski.
Wydrowski responded with a tremendous defensive effort, shutting down two-meters and keeping the Lion attack at bay. State Defensive MVP Reed Hendrickson made several blocks in goal, and the Wolverines extended their lead to 6-2 at halftime.
Marco Stanchi and George French led the second half offensive attack and helped keep the Wolverines comfortably ahead. French led the way with three goals, while Stanchi added two goals and three ejections drawn. Freshman Zack Rossman chipped in two goals, one assist and two steals.
Bellevue takes on cross-town rival Newport in a semifinal matchiup tomorrow at 10:30am in a rematch of the 2011 State Championship.
